Our Process
At Spiezia we believe that nature does it best. We’ve developed a unique process which uses solar and lunar energy to make the most of the air-dried herbs used in our products. The products are hand-made honestly and with passion so we know exactly what’s happening with each ingredient from start to finish. A targeted ‘maceration’ at the heart of each product provides unique properties – this combined with Soil Association certified ingredients and sustainable packaging results in a product that not only great for your skin, but also for the environment.
Let us take you through a typical journey of how a Spiezia product is made.
Your Production Team
Henry, Anita, and Jules make sure that your products are made with the best quality ingredients using unique methods that truly set Spiezia Organics apart from those other ‘organic and natural’ companies.
So, let’s take a look at the maceration process which is at the heart of the Spiezia products.
What is a Maceration?
Macerations are where we soften organic ingredients such as rose buds in oils. It transfers the specific properties and benefits each of the flowers and herbs have, into the oils which can easily applied to the skin.
Cold Pressing
Firstly we take our herbs and flowers and gently crush them with a pestle and mortar. This releases the properties of the ingredients and increases the potency of the macerations. This method is called cold pressing.
Why cold pressing? Cold pressing is the best way to extract the oils of the herbs and flowers while still retaining their benefits. It’s a careful process as heat is created in the pestle and mortar and the temperature must not reach 50°c.
Soaking the Herbs and Flowers
We only use glass macerating bowls to ensure constant purity. The prepared herbs and flowers are added and oil is slowly poured over them. Our products are highly concentrated because of the large amounts of herbs and flowers we use.

Infusing
The macerations are placed on warm stones in our maceration shed which also allows in plenty of sun and moonlight which both add to the process. They are left on the warm stones for at least a month, gently turning them every few days to keep the herbs and flowers moving and balancing the blend.
Pressing and Filtering
After a month, the macerations are ready to be pressed. We cold press them by hand which produces a higher quality of oil that retains all of its aroma and beneficial value to the skin. The freshly squeezed oil is filtered three times to remove any small particles of the herbs and flowers while retaining the properties that have infused into the oil.
Final Steps
Next we add, organic olive oil. We choose olive oil as it is the most similar oil to the body’s natural oil; sebum. Finally we add wheatgerm oil which helps to preserve the maceration and also repairs skin tissue damaged by excessive sunlight.
The maceration is finished! They are stored in glass and kept in a dark cupboard which prolongs their life and potency. They are only brought out when they are to form the base of a product.
That is the magic of Spiezia.
